Birthstones by Month

Origins and Belief

The practice of assigning a birthstone to each month is a longstanding tradition that links personal identity to gemstones. Examples that remain familiar include garnet for those born in January and diamond for April birthdays. The origin of the practice is widely linked to the twelve gemstones set in the biblical breastplate of Aaron, which represented the twelve tribes of Israel.

The modern, standardized list used today was formalized in 1912, and it has changed only once since then, when tanzanite was added to December. Legends and folklore long claimed that wearing a gem during its assigned month enhanced its therapeutic or protective influence, and some traditions even advised owning all twelve stones and rotating them month by month to obtain the full effect.
